Christmas is fast approaching and so the party season is upon us! The sparkle, black tie and uncomfortable shoes all make an appearance. Whether it’s on the dance floor or simply standing in your shoes, we want to help you chose the right footwear, know how to deal with those shoe related injuries and when to seek professional help.
Shoe Advice for Party Perfection
Choosing the right footwear can make all the difference in how your feet feel at the end of the night. Here are some tips:
1. Find the Right Fit: Ill-fitting shoes are a recipe for discomfort. Always try shoes on with the same type of socks or tights you’ll wear to the party. Look for a snug (but not tight) fit, with enough room to wiggle your toes. Remember your feet swell when hot too!
2. Opt for Comfort Features: Look for shoes with cushioned soles, arch support, and a secure fit. Styles with adjustable straps can help prevent rubbing and slipping. So many brands have sole technology to help with grip.
3. Break Them In: Never wear new shoes straight to a party. Wear them at home for short periods to soften the material and identify potential problem areas. You can even try wearing them with socks to help flexibility and confidence.
4. Heels with Caution: If you’re wearing heels, go for a block or wedge style rather than stiletto. Thin heels can affect balance and put further pressure on your posture. Lower heel heights (2–3 inches) can be kinder to your feet, especially the balls of your feet.
5. Carry Back-Up Flats: Slip a pair of foldable flats into your bag. Swapping your shoes halfway through the night can save your feet from serious strain and injury.
Common Foot Injuries from Poorly Fitted Shoes
• Bunions: Pointy-toed shoes can exacerbate bunions, causing discomfort and inflammation. This style of shoe may look elegant but can have a narrow toe box resulting in blisters.
• Plantar Fasciitis: Spending hours in unsupportive footwear can strain the ligament in your arch, leading to pain and stiffness. Flat shoes can also strain the feet with lack of support, we recommend flat shoes with a slight heel.
• Sprains: High heels increase the risk of ankle sprains due to instability. Wearing heels with an ankle strap can help support your feet.
• Corns and Calluses: These hardened areas of skin form due to excessive pressure and friction, often from tight or narrow shoes. So many styles of shoes have options for comfort and width these days so worth checking when shopping for party shoes!
How to Help Your Feet at Home
If your feet are feeling the effects of a long night, there are simple remedies you can try at home to speed up recovery:
1. Soak and Relax: Give your feet a warm soak with Epsom salts to reduce swelling and soothe tired muscles. Remember to have a sensible temperature if you are suffering with any cuts or blisters
2. Massage: Use a tennis ball or your hands to gently massage your soles and arches. Add some moisturising lotion for extra hydration and also helps with releasing tension.
3. Stretch It Out: Stretching your feet and calves can alleviate tension. Try flexing and pointing your toes or rolling a tennis ball under your foot.
4. Ice It: For any pain or swelling, apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or the classic bag of frozen peas in a tea towel for 15–20 minutes.
5. Elevate Your Feet: Rest your feet to reduce puffiness and improve circulation. We recommend using a cushion or pillow.
6. Blister Care: Don’t pop your blisters! Cover them with a sterile, padded dressing to prevent infection.
Preventative Care: it’s time to look after your feet this Christmas!
Don’t wait until your feet hurt to care for them. Regular moisturising, keeping toenails trimmed, and wearing well-fitted shoes daily will reduce your risk of foot injuries in the first place.
